#1 – Never take the first quotation you get. It may
be tempting, but this is your bargaining tool. Use it to go to other insurers and get them to match, or

the insurers that you like best, and just make sure there is nothing else they can offer on top of the deal
you have found.
#2 – Make sure you are not missing out on an even
better deal by asking if there are any multi-policies available. That could mean you would be able to put
your home, contents, car and maybe even life insurance all with the same company and receive an even bigger
discount.
#3 – Install a simple security system, and make sure
you have smoke detectors on each floor of the house. This will not only make your home safer, but your home
insurance quotation will undoubtedly be lower as a result.
#4 – Excess – the higher your excess the lower your
premium will be. Just be aware that if you do make a claim, your contribution will reflect this, so do not
offer to pay more than you can afford.
#5 – Sometimes it just makes sense to keep things
simple. If you are approaching a specialist in home insurance, it might be cheaper to then approach a
specialist in home contents insurance. Because they will know that specific part of the industry well, you
may find that separate policies will be cheaper.
#6 – Make sure you review your policy at least once a
year to make sure that you are only paying for what you need to, and likewise if you have had any additions
to your house or its contents, you should make sure these are covered too.
